Varafeldur

2025, Woven Wensleydale lamb locks with cotton wool blend thread

Varafeldur is an ancient Icelandic weaving technique used to create warm sheath of fabric to wrap around the wearer to protect themselves from the elements. The woven properties create breathability, while the locks in so late and protect from rain.

These pelts were traded to the Vikings and used as a form of currency. Each lock is hand-woven into the cloth, adding hours to the weaving process. I chose to use this technique, but put it in a more modern context by cutting into the fabric and making it into this detachable hood.
