Timeline

2025, Woven cotton and rayon, dyed with MX dyes

My weaving is a block print that I modified to create the stripe pattern seen here. While most of the choices were aesthetic, the idea of timelines emerged while working on the piece, particularly when thinking about stripes and lines. This became even more pronounced when I chose to display the piece to highlight the cloth's materiality, with folds, bunches, and pins. It felt like a representation of time and the journey of life folding over itself and into different eras, and feeling almost precarious, being held up by simple pins. Life has a particular kind of repetition, but if you look closely, you can see some points where the pattern stutters, revealing the maker’s hand, which I feel represents life. At the time, they seem like big mistakes, but when you take a look at the broader piece, you find it adds to the overall beauty of life, or is so small it’s barely noticeable in the grand scheme of things.
